There is something special about witnessing animals in their natural habitat. In the waters along the Outer Banks, we have the privilege of being able to catch glimpses of bottlenose dolphins that frequent our area. Dolphins are such beautiful, playful animals that capture the hearts of the young and old. Captain Stuart Wescott has a bursting passion for dolphins and for sharing that with others. This is why he offers dolphin tours aboard his boat, Captain Johnny.
Wescott is a 9th generation Outer Banks native and has a valuable understanding of the rich history of the area. His dolphin cruises begin in May and continue through October. The boat has a large viewing area so you don’t have to worry about finding a great spot and there is a sun protected area as well as a restroom on board. Starting in June the most popular cruise is the Guaranteed Dolphin Watch. This is a two-hour cruise on which you will be provided with a very informative narration along the way and may even witness dolphin mating and birthing.
If you are looking for a private charter cruise, you can choose the Pelican Island Cruise Bird Watch and watch commercial fishermen, see the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Osprey nests (many have chicks already), and Pelican Island, home to over 4,000 varieties of birds. If you would like a fun hands-on experience the whole family would enjoy, you can hop aboard the Shrimping-Crabbing Cruise. Finally, one of the most popular times on the Captain Johnny is The Sunset Dolphin Watch—the sun setting over Albemarle Sound while relaxing on a wonderful boat and dolphins in the background is simply the perfect setting. Get your tickets early for this one as it usually sells out fast!
